Our solitary mason bee hotel has undergone a renovation.
Red mason bees are gentle, non aggressive solitary bees that make their nests in hollow spaces (walls etc) but they are UNDER THREAT.
They raise their young on pollen, rather than nectar, so they pollinate quickly and best of all THEY DONT STING!
By creating bee-friendly habitats in our gardens and green spaces, we can begin to take an active role in helping bees fight disease and predation.
The object of the hotel, is to create a familiar safe place for them to protect their larvae (the babies) and allow us to observe & study these amazing creatures. The cartridge is removeable to ensure the hotel is safe and clean ready for the following spring & remove the cocoons, ensuring the life cycle continues. It also allows it to be taken into a classroom to observe / great for home ed science lessons & during the winter for protection
Designed & created by Mark Sandiford (Bee original woodshop) and made using reclaimed wood
